Bengal cats — crossing domestic cats, wild cats for new breeds
We had a cat named Merlin, whom I've spoken about in several posts. Merlin was a very long cat, all black, and he looked to be mostly Siamese, without the fully pointed ears and not exactly a Siamese shaped head.
We jokingly said old Merlin was a cross between a Siamese and a black panther or leopard or something from the jungle. He was a "wild" cat in many ways. He was also very playful and lovable, once he got to know our family and friends.
But I'm not talking about Merlin's sort of "wild" behavior or questionable heritage when I talk about crossing wild cats and domestic cats. I just read an interesting story about the increase in breeding domestic cats with various exotic cats, truly "wild" cats, and developing a distinct, accepted breed of cat. The information I ran onto that was most interesting was about Bengal cats, beautiful little pets with lively personalities. I hope you'll click on that link and take a look. They're fascinating little animals -- and proof that the line is easily blurred between "domestic" and "wild" when we're speaking of pets.
