Have you ever had health insurance for your pets?

We had a veterinary crisis of sorts about two years ago. Our cat, Tigra, developed a bump on her spine just up from her tail. The vet said it was possibly cancerous, but likely benign. Either way, he said she needed surgery to have it removed. I've forgotten the cost, but it made a dent in the old budget.
Then my son came to the rescue and picked up the tab for us. He has his own home now and never lived at home since we've had Tigra, but he knows we love her and he knew it was a serious decision trying to work out financing for the surgery she needed. (To update the story: Tigra's doing fine with no more bumps. The one they removed was indeed benign.)
If you've ever been in a situation like that yourself, you know how frustrating it can be. You love your pet and want to do whatever necessary for his/her good health. But no matter the situation, vet bills can be a real strain on the finances.
I just read an article telling of some companies which actually offer health pet insurance as a benefit for their employees. I had never heard of that. The companies mentioned in the article are some of the nation's largest. The bad news, however, is that most companies offering pet health insurance do little to make it affordable, although every bit helps, I guess.
Do you work for a company that offers health insurance for your pets? Do you have privately paid health insurance for your pet? How do you feel about pet health insurance? Tell us, please.
