How do you, as a pet lover and obviously animal lover, feel about zoos and circuses?

When I was a kid, and when our kids were young, I loved circuses and zoos. Indeed, when my wife, Shirley, and I were first married and several years before we had any kids, we often went to the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, where we were living for the first few years of our marriage. (Uh, I meant living in Seattle, NOT living in their zoo.)

As for circuses, they were a very rare treat when I was a kid. When our children were born, they both went to circuses at a very early age.

Now that I've been around a few years and gotten interested lately in various animal rights and animal treatment issues, I'm wary of circuses and zoos. Even very well maintained zoos and seemingly well-run circuses bother me. I wonder how much value there is in displaying various animals in zoos, and I really doubt the wisdom of training animals and putting them through their paces in circuses.

Ah, well, maybe I'm just getting old an cranky like Tigra, our old cat. Then again, maybe not.

How do you feel about zoos and circuses? I personally am bothered by the whole animals-on-display subculture, as I said above. At the same time, I probably won't be joining any public protests in the near future. But perhaps you would or have already protested zoo and circus treatment of animals? Tell us how you feel and what you may or may not be involved in presently, please?
